Team I - State Formation

Team Leaders

The aim of the State Formation Team is to study the emergence of the Nordic kingdoms in the general context of the characteristically European pattern of political division within a common religious and cultural framework.

The formation of the Nordic kingdoms is thus regarded as part of the more general problem of political division in the northern and eastern periphery of Europe in the tenth and eleventh centuries, which means that our main focus is on the division of the whole area into three kingdoms rather than on the ‘unification’ of each kingdom. This process is studied in connection with the parallel development of East Central Europe and the contacts with, for example, England and Germany through the Viking expansion and the introduction of Christianity, as well as against the background of general theories on early state formation.
