Post conference excursion to Hardanger 17-19th June 2007

Departure 17.30 from Museplass 1 (15 minutes walk from Dragefjellet).
Return Bergen Airport Flesland 1830, then Bergen Centre 1900.

The excursion will give a portrait of the fjord region of Hardanger, the route will give a cross section of West Norway from Bergen on the coast, eastward along the shores of the Hardanger fjord and up further eastward to just east of the watershed of the mountains of central South Norway.

Main items of the tour are:

- Hardanger and its role in forming the cultural identity of modern Norway in the 19th century Romantic period

- the physical landscapes of the fjord country and the Norwegial mountains

- traditional settlement patterns and structure, on-going changes and problems

- the specialized fruit farming region of inner Hardanger, one of the Northermost cases of commercial fruit farming in the world (and the main fruit farming area of Norway)

- the fjord and mountain country of Hardanger have great water power resources. Their development around 1905-10 has led to the development of electro-chemical and -metalurgical industry with resulting one-company towns and present day problems. This development will be discussed.

- modern large scale water power development has taken place more recently and the project of Eidfjord will be presented and discussed.

- the fjord and mountain country of Hardanger and the adjacent Hardanger plateau are of great natural beauty, but development of water power, electro industries and modern tourism present great challenges to preservation and management of these qualities. The two national parks of Folgefonna glacier and Hardanger mountain plateau will be discussed

- a fjord region like Hardanger presents communication problems causing challenges to the development of the area as a functional modern region, and these aspects will also be demonstrated.

The excursion will be led by Associate Professor Emeritus Arnfinn Seim and Professor Arild Holt-Jensen, both experienced excursion leaders and very much at home with the well known and less known attractions and highlights of this magnificent fiord landscape. This excursion is recommended as an experience for life!
