Alois Pichler er professor i filosofi ved Institutt for Filosofi og leder for Wittgensteinarkivet ved Universitetet i Bergen (WAB, http://wab.uib.no/). Hans forskning har fokus på Wittgensteins verk og filosofi, digital edisjonsfilologi, skrive- og tekstteori, dokumentontologi, digitale humaniora. I henhold til Google Scholar (22.12.2023) ligger hans siterings-h-index på 13 og hans siterings-i10-index på 19.
Ved Universitetet i Bergen underviser Alois Pichler hovedsakelig på Examen philosophicum og i Wittgensteins filosofi. Han har undervist i rammen av Erasmus lærerutveksling og sommerskoler i Bulgaria, Tyskland, Italia og Polen. I april 2017 har han vært gjesteprofessor ved Universitetet i Innsbruck og undervist der om Wittgenstein, digital edisjonsfilologi og tekstteori/tekstontologi. I januar 2022, har han vært gjesteprofessor ved Universitetet i Innsbruck og undervist der om Wittgenstein.
