Astrid Gynnild is a visiting research scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, 2011-2012, and a post doctoral researcher at the Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen, Norway. 

She has written a number of books about journalism and journalistic work processes, and is the co-editor of an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural edited volume of grounded theory. Her current research projects are focused on human aspects of new technology and visual journalism online. Among her topics are innovation/computational journalism, environmental messaging, transparency, and democracy development.

Astrid received her PhD in Media Studies from the University of Bergen in 2006, having developed one of the first grounded theories worldwide in the field of journalism; published as a monograph in Norwegian. “The Theory of Creative Cycling in the News Profession is also available as an abridged English version from Sociology Press. Astrid’s work also appears in journals such as the Nordicom Review, the Grounded Theory Review, and several Norwegian and American anthologies. She frequently presents her work at international conferences, workshops, and seminars in the Nordic countries as well as in Germany, the UK, and the US.

Astrid’s previous professional practice in the media includes working as a reporter and editor in Adresseavisen, one of Norway’s largest newspapers.  She is also an experienced educator, manager and professionally trained counsellor and supervisor within higher education.

Astrid received her MA in Nordic Languages from the NTNU in Trondheim. She was awarded the King Olav V undergraduate scholarship at Concordia College, US, by The Norway-America Association, and her PhD was funded by The Norwegian Board of Applied Media Research. She has been the chair of several journalism awards boards in Norway.

Astrid is vice-chair of the Norwegian Board of Applied Media Research 2009-2013 and chair of the research division at the same board. She is a Fellow of the Grounded Theory Institute and the editor of The Grounded Theory Review: An International Journal. She is a Lead Consultant with Grounded Theory Online and chair of the Journalism Studies Division, NordMedia13, The 22st Nordic Conference for Media and Communication Research, Oslo 2013.
