Instrumentation of swim tunnels and conductivity measurement of fish. (Master degree thesis in measurement science and instrumentation.) Author Endre Grimsbø. Supervisor associate professor Bjørn Tore Hjertaker. Cosupervisor professor Ole Brix. http://www.uib.no/filearchive/mdt_instrumentation-of-swim-tunnels-and-conductivity-measurement-of-fish.pdf

The overall aim of the NFR financed Farewell project, which my research fellow position is a part of, is to improve the slaughter procedures of farmed fish with respect to fish welfare and food quality. The aim of my PhD study is to contribute to establish gentle and efficient procedures to put fish to death, based on detailed studies on stress responses and on physical instrumentation, thus combining scientific evidence from both biology and physics, with primary focus on biological significance. More specifically my PhD work will include studies of effects from electro stunning and cooling on welfare related responses in different fish species. The application of swim tunnels has become an useful tool to gain more objective and accurate information about the responses in individual fish under challenging environmental conditions.  My PhD study will therefore also include work with modern instrumentation principles and contribute to implementation of new automatised measurement principles in swim tunnels, with a special focus on the fish oxygen consumption.
