Lavik disputerte våren 2008 på en avhandling om amerikansk filmhistorie, og er for tiden ansatt som førsteamanuensis ved institutt for informasjons- og medievitenskap. Han arbeider særlig med spørsmål knyttet til mediehistorie, estetikk, narrativ teori og kulturkritikk.

In the spring of 2008 Lavik defended his doctoral thesis on American film history, and he is currently associate professor at the Department of information science and media studies. His work focuses especially on issues related to media history, narrative theory, and cultural criticism.
