My field of research includes

  • computational linguistics and language technology
  • lexical semantics
  • Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD)
  • Multiword Expressions
  • statistical methods for language modelling and corpus linguistics.

I defended my Ph.D. thesis in December 2011 (title: Translation-based Word Sense Disambiguation). I have a Master's degree in Computational Linguistics and Language Technology at the University of Bergen (2003).

Currently I work in META-NORD (ending in January 2013) and in INESS (ending in 2015).

In META-NORD we work to make language technology resources more easily available, offering standardized metadata and negotiating licences.

In INESS we develop a database of syntactically analyzed sentences (a treebank).

In The Norwegian Newspaper Corpus project, I worked on automatic methods to identify Multiword Expressions and Anglicisms in Norwegian text. I explored a variety of so-called association measures in order to rank 2- and 3-word sequences (bigrams and trigrams) in terms of whether they are likely to constitute multiword expressions. This work is closely related to automatic term extraction and the automated detection of Anglicisms in Norwegian text. We also explored the use of machine learning systems to detect Anglicisms automatically.

Through my work in the development project for Include AS, I have worked with dyslexia-related problems, in particular studying the relation between orthography and pronunciation, producing tools to enhance a spell checker for dyslectics.
