Master Thesis: "Attached or Detached? Subjective Methods in War Journalism".

Hovedfokus på journalistikkforsknings, nyhetssosiologi, medieregulering og medieøkonomi, med empirisk fokus på aviser, nettnyheter og kringkasting. Metoder er primært kvantitative og interdisiplinære.

Leder for tiden NFR-prosjektet Diversity in the Norwegian News Media Landscape. Prosjektet undersøker hvordan mediereguleringen påvirker graden av mangfold i det norske medielandskapet på tvers av landet og på tvers av pulikasjonsplattformer.

Sjøvaag leder prosjektet Diversity in the Norwegian News Media Landscape: A Hybrid Method for Evaluating Media Policy finansiert av Norges Forskningsråd. Prosjektet skal evaluere effekten av medieregulering på mangfoldet i den norske nyhetssfæren. Reguleringene som evalueres omfatter eierskapsbegrensninger i regionale og nasjonale markeder, pressestøtte til marginale og meningsbærende aviser, og beskyttelse av allmennkringkasting. I prosessen vil det samles inn og analyseres store mengder data fra nasjonale, regionale og lokale nyhetstilbydere på papir, nett, mobil og kringkasting. Omfanget dreier seg om omlag 150 aviser fra hele landet, samt kringkasting på radio og fjernsyn. Prosjektet vil resultere i analyser av mangfoldet i det norske nyhetsmarkedet på tvers av eierskap, publiseringsplattformer og regioner og omfatter blant annet innhold, dagsordenmekanismer, siteringspraksiser og hvilke stemmer som kommer til orde. Dataomfanget fordrer en utvikling av nye metoder for prosessering og analyse i skjæringspunktet mellom medievitenskap og informasjonsvitenskap.
