For the last ten years I have led several research projects on political development, crime, policing and the governance of security in Africa, with an emphasis on South Africa. From an early interest on the significance of political and institutional trust, both in society and in the state and across the public and private divide, my main orientation during the last years has been to explore mechanisms that might reduce poverty/marginalization and manage conflict, which was identified as major obstacles preventing the generalization of trust in South Africa and elsewhere in Africa. This research interest led to a new collaboration, from 2003 onwards, with Professor Clifford Shearing who then directed the 'Community Peace Program' in South Africa. With Shearing I have since co-managed several research projects on the governance of security, exploring, among other things, ways in which local knowledge and capacity can be mobilized to increase the efficiency and accountability of systems of policing, and the power and self-directedness of poor communities. Research Funding has been obtained from several sources, such as the Norwegian Research Council and through the EU's 'Governance and Conflict Facility' for Southern Africa. With a consortium of partners in Africa and Europe I am currently trying to obtain EU funding for a continuation of this research through a new comparative study of urban security governance in Southern African.
