I am interested in the stable isotope fractionation of the transition metals Cu, Fe, and Zn at hydrothermal deep sea vent sites. Isotope compositions may improve our understanding e.g. of sulphide precipitation pathways and reactions within the oceanic crust and at the seafloor.

Microorganisms are able to metabolise metals and gain energy from the oxidation of reduced metal species. Thereby they may fractionate heavy stable isotopes. Investigations of microbially mediated precipitates found at some vent fields could give us new insights in microbial processes occuring in the deep sea.
