Jordskjelv seismologi, seismotektonikk og jordskjelv risiko

Teaching and student supervision at undergraduate and graduate levels. Teaching experience in several courses in seismology at undergraduate and graduate levels. Previously supervised 58 students (43 Master, 15 PhD).

Current teaching responsibilities:

GEOV255 (Seismotectonics) since 2004.

Contributes also to MNF490 (Vitenskapsetikk) since 2008.

Professor Atakan is currently Associate Editor of the "Journal of Seismology" (Springer) and Associate Editor of "Bollettino di Geofisica Teorica e Applicata". Kuvvet Atakan er født i Eskisehir, Tyrkia i 1957. Atakan er professor i seismologi ved Institutt for geovitenskap ved Det matematisk-naturvitenskapelige fakultet. Han begynte sin karriere ved Middle East Technical University i Ankara, hvor han tok en Bachelor of Science-grad fra 1980. Senere fortsatte han sine studier ved Universitetet i Bergen, der han tok cand.mag. i geologi i 1986 og hovedfag i struktur geologi/sedimentologi i 1988. Han ble dr. scient. i 1994 og forsket i sitt doktorgradsarbeid innen fagfeltet seismologi/geofysikk. Han har vært ansatt ved Universitetet i Bergen siden 1994, først som førsteamanuensis ved Institutt for den faste jords fysikk og siden 2001 som professor ved Institutt for geovitenskap. Han har også hatt lengre forskningsopphold i England og Tyrkia. Professor Kuvvet Atakan har vært viserektor for utdanning ved Universitetet i Bergen i perioden 2009 - 2013.
           
Atakan har vært prodekan ved Det matematisk-naturvitenskapelige fakultet og stedsfortredende instituttleder ved Institutt for geovitenskap. Han har tidligere vært medlem av Kollegierådet ved UiB, Fakultetsstyret ved Det matematisk-naturvitenskapelige fakultet og Instituttrådet både ved Institutt for den faste jords fysikk og senere ved Institutt for geovitenskap. I perioden 2009-2013 har han vært viserektor for utdanning ved Universitetet i Bergen, og i kraft av dette har han ledet universitetets Utdanningsutvalg, Læringsmiljøutvalget, og har vært styremedlem i Vitensenteret i Bergen og en rekke andre utvalg og komiteer.

Atakan har vært leder for programkomiteen for PhD-utdanningen ved Institutt for geovitenskap, og er leder for evalueringskomiteen av opprykk til professor innen geofysikk.

Atakan er medlem av Norges Tekniske Vitenskapsakademi (NTVA) og har vært styremedlem for Norsk Jordskjelvtekniske Forening (NJF) i 1996, 2004-2005 og i 1997 som styreleder. Han er siden 2008 representant for Norge i European Seismological Commission (ESC) og representerer Norge også i rådet for International Seismological Centre (ISC). Han har arrangert 10 vitenskapelige konferanser, blant annet ”the 9th International Conference in Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering (SDDE)”, som fant sted i Bergen i 1999. Han har også ledet en rekke symposia i internasjonale konferanser innen fagfeltene geodynamikk og seismologi. I 2010, ble professor Atakan utnevnt til en av Top 10 Internasjonale ledere i Norge.

Atakan er del av, og tidligere leder for, forskningsgruppen for geodynamikk ved Institutt for geovitenskap. Han hadde ansvaret for Norsk Nasjonalt Seismisk Nettverk (NNSN) i perioden 2007-2009 og har vært styremedlem i NNSN siden 2002. Han er nasjonal koordinator for - og medlem av - rådet for European Plate Observing System (EPOS). Han er medlem av redaksjonskomiteene for de internasjonale tidsskriftene "Journal of Seismology", "Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering" og "Bollettino di Geofisica Teorica e Applicata". Han har tidligere vært gjesteredaktør for "Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering" og "Journal of Seismology".

Hans forskningsinteresser ligger særlig innenfor seismotektonikk, seismisk risiko, med særlig vekt på forkastningsbrudd ved store jordskjelv. Han har deltatt i 44 internasjonale forskningsprosjekter, spredd utover hele verden. Professor Atakan har en betydelig vitenskapelig produksjon, med til sammen 103 publikasjoner og 110 vitenskapelige rapporter. Han har publisert kapitler i bøker, tekniske rapporter, og artikler i norske og internasjonale tidsskrift, spesielt innenfor seismologi og tektonikk. De nyeste vitenskapelige arbeidene handler om å identifisere forkastningskilder til megajordskjelv langs tektoniske plategrenser i subduksjonssoner. Atakan har også vært en aktiv foredragsholder på nasjonale og internasjonale konferanser, med til sammen 364 presentasjoner.

Atakan har lang undervisningserfaring ved UiB og har veiledet 43 masterstudenter og 15 PhD-kandidater. Han har også hatt en betydelig formidlingsaktivitet gjennom intervjuer og populærvitenskapelige bidrag i media, og i 2005 hadde han ansvar for utstillingen ”Når jorden skjelver – 100 års jubileumsutstilling for Jordskjelvstasjonen i Bergen” ved Bergen Museum.

 

Previously involved in 44 scientific projects in various geographical areas (mainly Europe, but also Central America, Africa and Asia) in the fields of seismotectonics, active tectonics, seismic hazard, local site effects, seismic monitoring and associated topics.

Currently involved in six projects and is the national coordinator of EPOS-Norway (European Plate Observing System - Norway) and member of the Project Development Board of the European ESFRI-EPOS Implementation Phase Project (European Plate Observing System – www.epos-eu.org).
