Marte E. S. Haaland har en doktorgrad i medisinsk antropologi og har jobbet med seksuell og reproduktiv helse og rettigheter både i Norge og globalt. 

I Norge har Haaland forsket på migrasjonshelse og svangerskapsomsorg, samt på kommunehelsetjenestens håndtering av covid-19. Hun har også ledet et forskningsprosjekt om kvinners erfaringer med abortnemnder. Abort og seksuell og reproduktiv helsepolitkk var også tema for hennes doktorgradarbeid i Zambia. Hun er interessert i utviklingen og implementering av nasjonal global helsepolitikk, spesielt innen seksuell og reproduktiv helse.
