Professor Sigurd O. Stefansson (Januar, 2015 ISI statistic 146, H-index 38) har lang forskningserfaring innen vekst og utvikling hos fisk, reproduksjon og tilpasning til miljøet, både i laksefisk og marine arter, med bruk av en rekke metoder. Sentralt i Stefanssons forskning er laksens smoltifiseringsprosess, og forskningen omfatter både grunnleggende studier og samarbeid med havbruksnæringen. Forskningstemaene omfatter miljømessig, genetisk og hormonelle kontrollen av smoltifiseringen, og grunnleggende mekanismer for tilpasning til sjøvann.
