Tonje Haugland Sørensen jobber med kunst og visuell kultur, med en hovedvekt på resepsjon av historie og historiografiske spørsmål. Hennes doktorgrad omhandlet andre verdenskrig i norske spillefilmer. I tillegg har hun jobbet mye med tysk og norsk kunst på 1800- og tidlig 1900-tall. For tiden jobber er hun post-doc med prosjektet Overview - the art of the aerial, hvor fokuset er luftperspektivet i en større kulturhistorisk sammenheng, og da særlig i forhold til spørsmål om persepsjon og det visuelles plass i moderne krigføring.
