Torgeir Uberg Nærland's PHD-project is titled ”Den kulturelle offentlighetens andrestemme – En analyse av musikkens betydning for politisk meningsdannelse i offentligheten”. By combining theoretical perspectives from public sphere theory and the sociology of music with empirical studies of aesthetical practice in musical genres the aim of this project is to explore which role music play in relation to democratic processes such as deliberation and the formation of opinion.

In addition Torgeir has also got an interest in the field of media production and copyright, and is currently working on a project where the goal is to formulate and disseminate a document stating best practices for the employment of the “right to quote” in Norwegian documentary filmmaking .
