I am interested in a wide variety of aspects related to climate change and the interplay between man-made and natural changes. I have authored and co-authored 130+ scientific papers on these subjects, which have been cited more than 15000 times with an H-factor of 57 (see: https://scholar.google.no/citations?hl=no&user=YnmZaSwAAAAJ&view_op=list...) . I was co-ordinatong lead author and lead authos for the paleoclimate chapters of the last two reports of the IPCC (AR4 and AR5).

As director for the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research from its founding in 2000 until 2013, I led the build-up of this large multidsicplinary climate research centre which has given me a broad background in climate issues and climate policies. I am frequently giving presentations to various audiences and policymakers in Norway and abroad.

In my research I study natural climate change, especially the influence of ocean circulation on past climate changes. I use marine sediments obtained from coring the deep ocean as source for information on past changes in the ocean. In these sediments I investigate the geochemistry of microfossil shells which give information on past ocean temperatures, current patterns, ventilation, sea ice cover and the history of glaciations. My interest spans several million years of time of the planet´s past conditions.

I have led several international oceanographic expeditions, and several reserach projects funded by national funding bodies and the EU. Currently my main project is "ice2ice"an ERC-Synergy grant, funded by the European Research Council (see: https://ice2ice.b.uib.no).

I am a member of the Academia Europeae, The Norwegian Acadamy of Science and Letters, Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences and the Norwegian Academy for Polar Research.
