My research interests are in isotope geochemistry, isotopic dating and mass spectrometry technique development. I am especially interested in natural small scale isotope variations and I make use of various micro-beam techniques for isotopic measurements, such as laser ablation ICP-MS at the University of Bergen (UiB) (http://billy.geo.uib.no/bgf) or secondary ion mass spectrometry in NHM Stockholm and GFZ Potsdam. I am currently involved in projects on Fe isotopic fractionation in active hydrothermal systems on the mid-Atlantic ridge where researchers are trying to determine scales and mechanisms of Fe isotopic fractionation that involve bacterial processes as well as a project that studies Li isotopic fractionation in the basaltic lavas of the oceanic crust in the North Atlantic. Recently I have been participating in fundamental studies of elemental and isotopic fractionation during laser ablation sampling for ICP-MS analysis that led to important improvements of this analytical technique. In addition, I am also continuing to work on several projects that make use of isotope geochemistry for deciphering the evolution and cycling of crustal rocks in orogenic belts in Europe (Variscan orogen), Africa (Kaoko Belt) and Western Antarctica.
