Coursework
The training component consists of minimum 30 credits (ECTS), and it must be completed and approved before submitting the thesis for evaluation for defence. It is recommended that the training component be completed during the first half year of your PhD study period. The training component consists of a mandatory part and an elective part.
All activities included in the training component must be of a high scientific standard and provide a sufficient amount of breadth and depth in the scientific field.
Through the training component, the PhD candidate is expected to improve his or her skills in scientific theory and research methodology. The development of skills in the dissemination of research results is also a required part of the training component.
PhD candidates can take advanced courses (PhD level) at the University of Bergen or at other institutions in Norway or abroad. The PhD candidates are advised to consult their main supervisor and administrative contact person before they attend a course that is not part of their original research plan.

Mandatory part training component
The training component of the research programme shall contain the necessary academic and methodological training which will benefit the doctoral candidate in his or her work on the dissertation and qualify the candidate for professions requiring indepth scientific knowledge.

Elective part training component
Both courses and several research related activities may be accepted as part of the training component.

Approval of training component
The PhD candidate must apply for approval of the training component at least six months prior to the planned defence.
