PhD Degree
The doctoral education is a structured and organized training of early stage researchers by research and for research. UiB is following the Salzburg principles of the third cycle within the Bologna process. The duration of doctoral training is 3 years and consists of an original research work and a training component.
The research work is written up as a thesis (monograph or consisting of a collection of articles with a synopsis). The thesis is evaluated by a committee with external and international members appointed as two opponents and a UiB-co-ordinator. If approved, the thesis will be defended by discussing the research findings with the opponents at a public defence. A successful defence grants you the PhD-degree and you will receive your diploma in a formal doctor promotion ceremony the following semester.
A PhD-study represents the start of a scientific career. During your study as a PhD-student the UiB highly encourages you to develop transferable skills[1] and to disseminate your research results.
A PhD-degree is awarded to PhD-candidates that document[1]:
· Mastery of the skills and methods of own research field
· Ability to conduct research with scholarly integrity
· Contribution of original research of publishable quality in her thesis work
· Capability of critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis of new and complex research ideas
· Ability to communicate with peers, the larger scholarly community and with society in general about their areas of expertise
