Equality
UiB was awarded the Gender Equality Prize in January 2009 by the Ministry of Education and Research. The prize of one million Norwegian kroner was presented to UiB based on an evaluation of the university’s diligent efforts to achieve gender equality. One of the main aims of the university’s equal opportunities plan is that 50% of all new academic employees should be women. If this plan is successful, there will be an almost equal number of male and female professorial positions by the year 2035.
The University of Bergen uses a lot of resources on promoting equal opportunity initiatives. The aim of one particular management development project is to persuade more women to become leaders. Both a media mentor project and an ordinary mentor project are in the pipeline and a major conference on women and science subjects is being planned. A qualification scholarship and time free from teaching are also means that are used when recruiting women for academic posts.

Sexual harassment?
The University of Bergen has passed a Code of Ethics in the Relationship between Students and Supervisors. Should incidences of sexual harassment occur, those who feel exposed to unwelcome, threatening or unpleasant sexual attention from fellow students or staff, are encouraged to seek support, guidance and help.
