Health
Global Health research has long traditions at the University of Bergen. Already in 1969, UiB initiated the establishment the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) in Addis Ababa, a leading research centre for leprosy and tuberculosis research.
From the mid-1980s the field was strengthened first through the Centre for Development Studies and from 1988 in particular, through the Centre for International Health (CIH). Close collaboration with the Department of Health Promotion and Development as well as several other departments at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry has helped expand and strengthen this field of research.
The majority of research on global health is carried out in partnership with institutions in low-income countries with a significant focus on research training and leadership development.
CIH and its Research School in International Health is today a leading national and international research centre. The research environment and several research clusters were rated “Excellent” by an international expert panel evaluating health research for the Research Council of Norway in 2011.
