Research areas
The University of Bergen has a long-term commitment both to milieus that safeguard professional diversity and to internationally profiled professional milieus that are experts on thematic problems.
In addition to research and education in the traditional university disciplines, the academic profile of the University of Bergen has two major focuses: marine research and development research.
In addition, the university has some new time-limited areas of commitment that are important for innovation and renewal.

Marine Research
The University of Bergen is a northern cornerstone of European marine science. Situated at the shores of the Atlantic Ocean the university is ideally placed to conduct studies into various aspects of marine research.

Development Research
Development related research is one of two strategic areas of research at the University of Bergen for the period 2005-2010. In the course of the past 35 years the university has earned a distinguished reputation both in Norway and internationally for its excellent and result driven collaboration in research and education with universities and other research partners in developing countries.

Nano Science
Nano science at UiB consists of four lines of research: Nano basis, containing research within the basal subjects of physics and chemistry. Nano bio, containing projects within the fields of biology and biomedicine. Nano process, with projects within the field of process technology. Nano ethic, with focus on ethical issues connected with nano technology.

Translational Medicine
Bergen Hospital Trust and the University of Bergen are collaborating on a research programme in translational medicine. The programme includes projects within the fields of neuroscience, diabetes and cancer.

Region and Regionalization
Region and regionalization is a cross faculty strategic commitment that focuses on three main thematic areas: “Landscape”, “Community/Politics” and “Cultural Inheritance/History”.

Democracy and Constitutional Government
The Faculty of Law is responsible for the co-ordination of this programme. The Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Humanities also participate.
