Research at The Faculties
The University of Bergen has six faculties with altogether 35 departments and research centres. At all of these, and also at Bergen Museum, research of high, international quality takes place.
The University of Bergen is a research university with a high international profile. The University has two major focuses: marine research and co-operation with developing countries. These are therefore central in the faculties' strategies of research.
Research is the central principle of education, from the bachelor's degree to the doctoral education. All academic staff have both a duty and a right to be active scientists.

The Faculty of Humanities offers research expertise within several fields, providing a solid basis for teaching. The faculty consists of five departments that cover more than twenty disciplines.

The faculty has strong research environments in private law. Research areas of priority include competition law and EU law, as well as intellectual property law.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences is one of six faculties at the University of Bergen, and has around 2700 students. Teaching is offered at undergraduate and graduate (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) levels. The Faculty consists of 8 departments, which provide the foundations for its teaching and research activities.

Researchers at the Faculty of Social Sciences publish research related to a number of fields and contribute new knowledge on important social issues. The researchers build a network of contacts with society and businesses, and the dissemination of the results of their research forms a natural part of their work. The Faculty's research activities shall be economically and politically independent.

The University Museum of Bergen is a branch of the University of Bergen. The research is the basis, but also integrated with the other main activities in the Museum: Collection, systematisation, preservation, research, and dissemination of knowledge.
