Developing countries research cooperation

UiB’s partnerships

Examples of cooperation in Africa include the University of Makarere in Uganda, the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and several South-African universities. In Asia, UIB cooperates namely with the Tribhuvan University in Nepal, the Dhaka University in Bangladesh and the Tibet University, and in Latin America with Universidad de Costa Rica, to name a few. Programmes for cooperation with developing countries
Research cooperation between UiB and the South has mainly been supported by the following initiatives:

•  NUFU: Norwegian Programme for Development, Research and Higher Education, financed by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) and administered by the Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Higher Education (SIU)
• Programmes administered by the Research Council of Norway (RCN), such as the South African - Norwegian programme for research co-operation (see the section Internasjonalt on the RCN’s web site)
• Programmes run by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD)
• Initiatives of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (see Aid schemes and stipends)

Projects at UiB

The main collaboration areas involve international health, medicine, natural sciences, poverty and resource management. Among others, the following projects coordinated by UiB should be mentioned:

• Nile Basin Research Programme, supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the University of Bergen
• Global Moments in the Levant, supported by the Research Council of Norway
• In the wake of colonialism, supported by the Research Council of Norway

Global and development-related research
Global and development-related research is one of two priority areas for research at the University of Bergen. This is research that addresses the global challenges of the 21^st century and that is especially relevant for understanding the background, contexts and processes of change at global, regional and local levels. This research includes both the study of development as such and research for development.

Global and development-related research takes place at all faculties, most departments and at several specialized centres at the university, often in partnership with institutions worldwide. It includes both basic and applied research and is organized in research groups anchored in the relevant disciplines.

Organization
UiB has established a strategic council for global and development-related research with Professor Gro Therese Lie as chairperson. The council works to facilitate new initiatives, strengthen synergies across disciplines and further develop the University’s long tradition of academic cooperation with partners in the South.

The University has also created a special unit, UiB Global, tasked to coordinate and support such multi- and transdisciplinary research activities spread throughout the University, and to initiate new projects and activities addressing global development-related challenges. UiB Global’s administration is part of the Department of Research Management.
