Worldwide research cooperation
The University of Bergen is involved in extensive research collaboration with institutions worldwide, including academic centres of excellence in North America and Asia.
Networks
In 2003, the University of Bergen joined the prestigious Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) that brings together renowned research-led universities in Europe, the USA, China and Australia. It is also a member of the International Association of Universities (IAU), a UNESCO-based worldwide association of universities.
The University as whole, its centres and UiB staff are officials or members of numerous organisations that are cross-continental in scope, e.g. associations under the umbrella of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research, the Census of Marine Life, the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, the World Federation of Neurology, the International Federation of ORL Societies and many others.
Bilateral agreements
UiB has major institutional agreements with the University of Washington in Seattle (UW) in the USA, Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) in Canada and Makerere University in Uganda. At UiB cooperation with the above North American universities is administered by the Joint Exchange Programme with MUN and UW. The collaboration with the Makarere University is supported through a 15-year framework agreement on research collaboration, scientific competence building, student and staff exchange, and institutional development.
Centres and projects at UiB
UiB hosts the secretariat of the Comparative Research Programme on Poverty and the International Water History Association as well as the World Health Organisation’s Collaborating Centre for Health Promotion and Education and the UNESCO-Associated Centre for Microscience.
UiB institutes and departments have taken part in a number of international initiatives of global importance, such as the Integrated Ocean Research Drilling Programme and the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 4th Assessment Report.
