Getting Around
The city centre of Bergen is relatively small and most shops and services the city offer are within walking distance. The city is also close to nature with Mount Fløien, with its possibilities of recreational activities, such as treasure hunt, paddling, monster park etc., just minutes walking from the busy city centre. You can either take a "Fløien bane" or walk using designated footpaths to get to the top of the mountain where you can see Bergen from up.
But Bergen city is almost 500 km2, and 50 % of its area is higher than 160 meters above sea level. It is known as the city of 7 mountains (but in fact there are many more) and has a significant history as a shipping town of European . It is surrounded by sea and mountains - which do not provide the best conditions for an effective and modern road network. We do experience problems with rush traffic in and out of the city in all directions, which has led to the start of the Bergen Program for Transportation, Urban Development and the Environment (2002- 2025). One of the main projects in the package is building a new light-rail system: Bybanen, and the first part of this system was opened in the summer of 2010.
Cycling is still a challenge in several places in the city, but an investment in cycling lanes and cycling paths in recent years has resulted in much better conditions for this form of transport too.
