Norwegian as a Second Language for Employees

Admission to Norwegian courses is based on a ranking within three different main categories:

1. Foreign researchers (employees) at the University of Bergen and spouses
2. Agreement and programme students and degree students
3. Refugees and immigrants

If you are not in one of the groups mentioned above, you do not qualified for admission to Norwegian courses at the University of Bergen. However, employees of institutions affiliated to the university, may be offered available places. An invoice of the cost will be sent to the institution in question (for the academic year 2012/13 the cost for one course of normal progeression is 8800 kroner). Please contact the HR-department for more information about this possibility if you are interested.

Category 1:
All applicants in the category of foreign employees (and spouses) at the University of Bergen, have the right to apply for a Norwegian Language course at any level.
This category includes doctoral candidates with a contract of employment at the university. Employment must be of at least six months duration in 100 % position.

Spouses/partners applying for admission, have to document their status with proof of residence or other valid documentation of relationship with the employee. Spouses need to get their own Norwegian national identification number in order to be registered as students at the Norwegian course.

Find here  the Application form for employees at the University of Bergen and their spouses.

Placement Test
Applicants who have not completed a Norwegian course at the university previously and wish to start at a higher level than level 1, must take a placement test. The test is used to determine the course level for which the applicant is qualified for admission. The test is used for applicant placement only. The test is not graded and no certificate is issued. The placement test takes place in August for the autumn semester and in January for the spring semester.

Application Deadlines
Employees and spouses are encouraged to apply at any time of the year. Applying before 1 June (for courses starting in the autumn semester) and 1 November (for courses starting in the spring semester) almost guarantees acceptance for the courses starting at the beginning of the semester. We consider applicantions almost up until the course starts.

Special for this category (employees and spouses/partners), the university will also have courses for beginners starting later in the semester (approx. mid October and March), with the exam in the end of the following semester.

Please note: For applicants in category 2 and 3 there are different application deadlines, please contact The Centre for Information and Student Services (Langes gate 1-3).
