Journal Clubs

The Ecological and Environmental Change Research Group is involved with two Journal Clubs - one with a palaeo theme and one on general themes in ecology and evolution. The Journal Club meetings are a good way of staying updated on the latest research. The meetings give us experience in reading scientific literature and understanding and applying complex scientific terms and ideas. It's not all about shredding papers to pieces - there is a machine that does that - but can help in recognising good practice for when writing your own papers. Both students and researchers are welcome to join the Journal Clubs!

The Palaeo Club meets once a month on a Friday between 12:30 and 14:00 and discuss papers mainly related to palaeoecology and climate change. The meetings are aimed at anyone interested in palaeoecology, climate change and related topics. Two paper are usually discussed at each meeting, which two people have prepared in advance. A decision is also made on which two articles will be discussed at the next meeting. Some of the articles discussed may be written up as popular science for dissemination to a wider audience. The Palaeo Club is orgainsed by Linn Cecilie Krüger (Linn.Kruger@bio.uib.no).

The general ecology and evolution club includes researchers from the Evolutionary Ecology and the Aquatic Behavioural groups and is organised by Adele Mennerat (adele.mennerat@bio.uib.no). The club usually meets every second Monday between 10:00 and 11:00 in the Økoloft, NW side of floor 1 in the Realfagbygg. The format of the meeting is for one person to sum up the chosen paper and the group then discuss it together. Participants are asked to suggest suitable papers for discussion and a group decision is made on which one shall be discussed at the following meeting. The first meeting this semester will be on monday 12 October.
