Diarrhea, pneumonia, malnutrition, common infections and HIV infections are among the leading causes of poor health and death in young children in developing countries. Reducing both child mortality and maternal mortality are the targets of the Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5. The Child Health and Nutrition Research Group undertakes research with the ultimate aim to improve child health and survival in low and middle income countries (LMIC). The focus of the group is being expanded to include maternal health.

    Zinc treatment for infections in children

    Serious infections cause a lot of child deaths in developing countries. A study in India focuses on the effect of zinc as a supplement to antibiotic treatment. The findings, which are now published in the Lancet, showed that zinc reduced treatment failure by 40%.
