The project "Death of adrenocortical cells in autoimmune Addison's disease: Homicide or suicide?" has been granted funding  from the program independent projects in medicine, health and biology (FRIMEDBIO). Among the 356 applications to FRIMEDBIO Husebye was one of 17 that came through the eye of the needle. With post-doc. Eric Bratland in the lead, Husebye’s research group will study immune-mediated mechanisms that lead to the destruction of the adrenal cortex in Addison's disease. Bratland is together with international partners, developing new mouse models for Addison's disease, and will in this project, characterize these models further. Together with animal models and studies in cell cultures, patient samples from Registry for organ-specific autoimmune diseases (ROAS) will be used. The aim of the project is to improve diagnostic methods and treatment of patients with Addison's disease, and eventually be able to prevent autoimmune adrenal insufficiency.
