Were Norwegian immigrants to Latin-America between 1820 og 1940 much desired as new compatriots and labourers in the country they came to? Or were they adventurers who ventured into mostly unsuccessful colonizing- and business efforts? “Desired Immigrants - Frustrated Adventurers? Norwegians in Latin America, 1820 – 1940” is a cross-discipline project involving scientists at different institutions in Norway and Latin-America? The members of the research group will make use of the especially comprising sources that deal with Norwegian emigration to map all Norwegian immigration to Latin-america covering a 120-year period. They wil furthermore include these findings in a wider context pertaining to immigration and cultural encounters, nation building and economic development.
