Profile


The Research School in Medieval Studies offers PhD candidates in Medieval Studies at the University of Bergen tuition and supervision in the field. The Research School endeavours to facilitate the timely completion of the Centre's PhD programme, to provide an appropriate academic and social space for its candidates, and to ensure that candidates' work achieves the highest academic standards.

The Research School is directed by Geir Atle Ersland and co-ordinated by Leidulf Melve and Aidan Conti.

The Research School benefits from co-operation with a number of partner institutions offering PhD candidates at UiB opportunities to work with a range of international faculty and peers. Partners include the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic, University of Cambridge, the Centre for the Study of the Viking Age, University of Nottingham, and the Department of Scandinavian Studies, University College London.

The Centre for Medieval Studies, UiB is also part of the Nordic Centre for Medieval Studies comprising medievalists from the Universities of Gothenberg, Helsinki, Southern Denmark and the Finnish Literature Society.

Additionally, the Centre for Medieval Studies, UiB has cooperative agreements with the Centre for Medieval Studies, Charles University, Prague, and the Department of Medieval Studies, Central European University. The Centre also participates in the Medieval Studies activities of the Worldwide University Network.
