About SKOK
The Centre for Women’s and Gender Research (SKOK) is an interdisciplinary research centre that aims to service all the faculties at the University of Bergen. SKOK’s main objective is to strengthen women’s and gender research at the university at large. SKOK aspires to function as a vital arena for researchers not only at our own university, but also to serve as a link to other research communities, both nationally and internationally. One of SKOK’s main goals is to secure a long term interdisciplinary competence building in this field of research.
Research
SKOK is a research centre, and research is therefore our main priority. Partly, we strive to coordinate and strengthen the women’s and gender research that already exist at the university and partly we wish to stimulate and initiate new activities within this research area at all the faculties. Research conducted at SKOK is markedly interdisciplinary and is oriented towards the development of theory and methodology, but also sees it as our task to stimulate empirical and applied research.
Our affiliated faculty today covers a wide range of research areas and themes: comparative literature, history, philosophy, social anthropology, feminist and gender theory, sociology, psychoanalysis, sexuality, development studies, migration studies and history of the family.
Seminars and conferences
The centre is frequently hosting lecture- and seminar series relevant for women’s and gender research. SKOK also organizes national and international conferences often in cooperation with specific departments/milieus. All our activities are announced consecutively on our web pages. The seminars are first and foremost directed towards Ph. D. students and researcher at the University of Bergen, but are in principle open for students on all levels as well as others interested.
Research education and Research Networks
SKOK is one of the partners in the Nordic Research School (www.norsgendir.org). The Research School organizes courses for Ph. D. candidates as part of the candidates’ obligatory research education. The centre is also a part of an international research community and is active in AOIFE- and the ATHENA-networks.
Other studies related to SKOK
SKOK initiated the development of the bachelor degree in Women’s and Gender studies (BAHF kjønn) and scholars located at SKOK have coordinated undergraduate courses and modules in gender studies on several faculties. Since SKOK’s mandate does not include teaching, the centre is not responsible for any undergraduate course or study programmes offered at the university. SKOK’s academic staff, however, is part of teaching teams in several different subjects offered at the UiB, both on undergraduate and graduate levels. SKOK is academically responsible for KVIK101: Introduksjon til kjønnsforskning, a course that is part of the inter-disciplinary Bachelor degree in Women and Gender studies (BAHF kjønn). Our researchers lecture in the following courses: PSANA101: Innføring i psykoanalyse and SOS111: Familien i endring (Changing Families). SKOK is also involved in the Master’s programme Gender and Development - GAD.
Other activities
Part of our activities are of a less academic character. SKOK sees it as an important task to communicate to the general public the results of the ongoing gender research at the University of Bergen. We therefore encourage our staff to participate in the public debate, to attend external seminars and to give lectures outside the university. Furthermore, we cooperate with other institutions such as Den Nationale Scene (The National Venue of Theatre, in Bergen), Bergen International Festival, feminist organisations, Amalie Skramselskapet, etc. SKOK also collaborate with female artists from Bergen whom are invited to present their art in our seminar room at the 2nd floor in Allégt. 34.
