Master's Programme in French

The Degree

The Master´s programme leads to the degree Master of Philosophy in French. It is a two-year programme (120 ECTS credits).

Objectives / Contents

The French Master´s programme aims to give a high level of knowledge in French language and French literature while providing great competence in oral and written use of modern French. The Master´s programme also aims to develop a critical and independent attitude to problems and methods within the scientific disciplines in the subject.

 

The French Master´s programme (120 credits) contains five courses:

FRAN305/ Linguistic and literary theories after 1900 (15 credits)

FRAN302/Grammar, translation and Medieval French (15 credits)

FRAN303/Linguistic or literary seminar course, written exam (15 credits)

FRAN304/Linguistic or literary seminar course, oral exam (15 credits)

FRAN350/Master´s thesis in French (60 credits)

 

The courses can be divided into three parts:

- one basic part of 30 credits (FRAN305 and FRAN302)

- one specialization of 30 credits (FRAN303 and FRAN304)

- The Master´s thesis of 60 credits (FRAN350)

 

The two courses in the specialization can be either linguistic or literary in content.

Programme profile

At the institute, research is carried out on French language, literature, culture and didactics, and also in part on the area at the intersection between literary science, culture and social science.

Programme structure

The programme consists of four course modules totalling 60 ECTS credits, and a thesis worth 60 ECTS credits.

Master thesis

The Master´s thesis is an individual research project on French language, literature, culture or didactics. The subject of the thesis is chosen in collaboration with your academic supervisor at the beginning of the second semester at the latest. You will receive individual guidance during the research and writing process. The thesis must be written in French and should be between 70 and 100 pages.

Method

The Master´s programme in French aims to give you insight into central methods in linguistics and literary science. In the Master´s thesis, you choose to specialise in language or literature, and the subject of the thesis will play a major part in deciding the working method.

Admission requirements

Bachelor- or Cand.mag.-Degree with specialization (90 credits) in French, or corresponding education. If the applicant has studied with a higher education institution that has a requirement of minimum 80 credits in the specialization, this will also be accepted.

 

Students wishing to apply to the Master¿s programme in French on a different basis than what is given as approved specialization in the subject (see the study plan for French), must apply for approval beforehand, 15th of March at the latest. These applications must contain transcripts/diplomas, list of curriculum and explanations of the courses that the applicant wishes to have approved as specialization. Any approval must be enclosed with the application to the Master¿s programme.

- Self-financing degree students

- Applicants for the Quota Scheme from the following universities: Univ. de Yaoundé 1 (Cameroon), University of Dohuk (Iraq), University of Sulaimania (Iraq).
