The Degree

The Master´s programme leads to the degree of Master of Philosophy in Nordic languages and literature. It is a two-year programme (120 ECTS credits).

Objectives / Contents

The aim of the master´s programme in Nordic languages and literature is to increase your knowledge and deepen your insights into Nordic studies in general as well as to allow you to specialize in a subfield of your choice and develop independent and critical attitudes to primary and secondary sources and their academic treatment.

Programme structure

The programme consists of four courses of 15 ECTS credits each and a master´s thesis of 60 credits. You are expected to fulfil the programme´s course requirements in the first year and complete the thesis in the second. The programme courses are designed to focus on selected topics in Nordic (i.e. Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Icelandic, and Faroese) languages and literature. The main focus is on Norwegian in most courses. There are certain requirements to the combination of courses and types of exams, but it is possible to choose only literary or only linguistic courses as well as a combination thereof.

The language of instruction is normally Norwegian, but Danish and Swedish may also be used. The language of examination is Norwegian, and you are required to master both forms of written Norwegian, i.e. Bokmål and Nynorsk.

Master thesis

The thesis is a work of advanced study in a topic of Nordic studies as delineated above, including also topics such as e.g. subject didactics and the acquisition of Norwegian as a second language. It is written in Norwegian and should be between 70 and 110 pages. The aim of the thesis is to show that you have extensive knowledge and understanding of the topic and relevant research, and to demonstrate your ability to master the appropriate methodology and theoretical apparatus.

Method

One of the four courses is a compulsory preliminary course in theory of science, methodology and academic writing.
