The Degree

The Master´s programme leads to the degree of Master of Philosophy in Spanish Language Studies and Latin America Studies. It is a two-year programme (120 ECTS credits).

Objectives / Contents

The Master´s programme aims to offer international students, primarily from developing countries and Eastern Europe, a second degree in Latin American Studies.

The prime objective of the programme is to educate specialists in the various fields (language, literature, culture and society) relating to the countries in the region concerned. The emphasis of the programme is on the humanities, but students will also be able to pursue studies in fields related to social sciences.

Programme profile

In addition to being a traditional language course, the Master´s Programme in Spanish Language and Latin American studies is also a course that deals with a geographical area. The focus is on Latin America, and cultural knowledge is an important part of the research that takes place at the department, in addition to language and literature.

Programme structure

The programme consists of four course modules totalling 60 ECTS credits, and a Master´s thesis of 60 ECTS in one of the following fields: language, literature or cultural studies.

Master thesis

The Master´s thesis is an individual research project on a subject of your own choice taken from one of the three main disciplines in the course: (1) Spanish linguistics, (2) Latin American literature and (3) Latin American cultural knowledge. The Master´s thesis is the most important part of the Master´s programme, and it has been estimated to take two semesters of intensive work. The theme for the Master´s thesis may in principle be chosen freely following advice from your course lecturer, but, in practice, it will be decided on the basis of your academic skills and your academic supervisor´s area of research. The Master´s thesis must be written in Spanish and should be between 70 and 100 pages. You will receive individual guidance during the research and writing process.

Method

In the work on your Master´s thesis, you will make independent use of methods and scientific working techniques from the subject area in your research of relevant material from one of the three main disciplines.
