The Master´s programme leads to the degree Master of Philosophy in International Health. It is a two-year programme (120 ECTS credits).

The programme will provide you with a deeper knowledge and research training in important subjects within the fields related to international health. The aim of the programme is to provide research training as part of competence building in low income countries.

Objectives / Contents

The Master's programme in International Health is an English-taught programme offered by the Faculty of Medicine and Dentisrty at the University of Bergen. The Centre for International Health coordinates the teaching programme. The programme will provide deeper knowledge and research training in important subjects within the fields related to international health. A frame and a curriculum for the master's programme will be developed for each student and should preferably reflect areas of high priority in the student's home region. The programme is managed with assistance from the Master's Programmes in dentistry and health promotion.

Programme profile

The Master´s programme offers a variety of research possibilities within which you can realise a research project. You will be associated to a specific research group or group of scientists. Many of the research groups overlap. The main areas are:

  • HIV/AIDS
  • Child Health and Nutrition
  • Maternal and Child Health
  • Tuberculosis
  • Global Health (Health Policy, Health Systems Research, Ethics, Health Economics, Culture)
  • Occupational Health
  • Climate and Health
  • Vaccines and Immunology

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the degree/master´s programme in International Health students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a clear conceptual understanding of the key determinants for health and quality of life of populations, with particular emphasize of low and middle income countries
  • Understand the evidence base for research and the basic principles of research methodology, and be able to suggest relevant design for research that is appropriate in diverse environmental settings
  • Critically analyze, formulate, synthesize and construct effective and appropriate responses to policy and practice issues in health service delivery in diverse settings
  • Demonstrate competence in utilizing relevant and appropriate tools and frameworks for planning, developing and managing and evaluating responses to health challenges in resource poor settings
  • Communicate effectively to diverse audiences utilizing a range of media
  • Examine their own practice in a critical manner

 

Programme structure

The Master´s Programme in International Health comprises of two main components: a tuition part and an individual research project (Master´s thesis). The tuition part includes basic (compulsory) courses and a study track or individual studies carried out in collaboration with the supervisor(s) (60 ECTS credits). The final year consists of research and preparation of a thesis (60 ECTS credits).

Master thesis

The Master´s thesis is the most important part of the programme. During the two first semesters, you will, together with your supervisor(s), design a research project. The Master´s students are accepted as part of one of the research groups and can establish a research project in accordance with the research groups´ thematic focus. The thesis may be written as two manuscripts for scientific articles or as a monograph. The aim of the thesis is for you as a student to demonstrate knowledge of central research principles and to critically and systematically analyse different research topics and data materials.

Method

A combination of lectures and individual studies will be used, applying both qualitative and quantitative methods depending on the research topic.

Prerequisites

The candidates must fulfil the basic requirements including good knowledge of the English language, according to specific requirements, for admission to the University of Bergen. A good Bachelor's degree level is required for admission. Candidates are selected from graduates of schools of medicine or dentistry, and from graduates of related disciplines of science or social sciences such as public health, nursing, nutrition, human biology, medical technology, pharmacy, social and behavioural sciences and international health.

Competence in the English language must be documented according to specified requirements.

The deadline for applying is 1 December for the next academic year (starting in August) .

The Master´s Programme in International Health is open to applicants with a quota scholarship (only candidates from our collaboration institutions) and for self financing applicants residing abroad. Please note that the online application form is not open before October.

Self financing students residing in Norway may apply within 15 April via søknadsweb.

 

 

Admission Requirements

A first degree (bachelor's degree) of three or four years' duration from an approved institution of higher education.
Applicants must provide documentation of English language proficiency.

Instruction

The master programme in International Health is a 2 year full-time study programme organised for each student as individual programmes or appointed track of study and include courses, lectures and seminars. The students will be attached to departments according to the subjects and fields selected. The Centre for International Health will secure supervisors from the Faculty of Medicine, other faculties or competent institutions. An interdisciplinary profile of the programmes is possible. The programme may also be used in a "Sandwich" model: The candidate's research is carried out both at University of Bergen and at the candidate's home institution . The duration of study time is divided between the institutions. The final grade may be given by the University of Bergen or by the home institution.

Thesis

The aim of the writing of the thesis is that you as a student will document knowledge of central research principles and to critically and systematically analyse different research topics and data materials.
