Master's Programme in Biology

Objectives / Contents

The master's programme will give you a deep insight in, and an overview of the discipline biology. Within the Master's Programme in Biology you can choose among the following specialisations:

  • Biodiversity, Evolution and Ecology
  • Microbiology
  • Geobiology
  • Environmenal toxicology

Depending on the specialisation you choose, the programme will give you an extensive introduction to ecology, evolution or systematic research that covers themes ranging from the biology of single organisms to bio-geographical patterns, in-depth insight into microscopic organisms: viruses, bacteria, fungi, single-cell algae and protozoa, insight and overview of the subject areas of cell and developmental biology based on a physiological and anatomical approach or a deeper insight in the field of physiology and its application within research, industry, teaching and management. You will also receive training in conducting an independent scientific study.

Admission requirements

Main intake in the autumn semester. For more information about the application procedure please see:

For international applicants residing abroad (Application deadline 1 December) http://www.uib.no/education/admission/master/international-applicants-residing-abroad

For international applicants residing in Norway (Application deadline 15 April) http://www.uib.no/education/admission/master/international-applicants-residing-in-norway

The Master's Programme in Biodiversity, Evolution and Ecology will not be offered to self-financing and Quota students the academic year 2013/14.

The Master's Programme in Microbiology will not be offered to self-financing students the academic year 2013/14.

The selection of students for admission to the Master's programmes in Biology is based on the following criteria:

* The average grade of the Bachelor's degree must be at least 2nd class upper division/B or the equivalent as academic result

* Your Bachelor's degree must include knowledge and competence in biology corresponding to 60 ECTS (one academic year) and should be documented with course descriptions and learning outcomes for the degree

* Academic degree not older than two years (exceptions can be made if the applicant has relevant work experience)

* A good command of English

Additional consideration is given to the following:

* Lab experience and practical field experience (must be documented)

* Depth and relevance of educational training

* Extent and relevance of work experience

* Connection to cooperating institutions of UiB (required for the Quota Scheme)

* The applicant's prospects for having a productive career in the special field of study

* Consideration to ensure diversity in the pool of students admitted to the programme

Number of self-financing students admitted to the master's programme: max 3 students

Applicants for the Quota Scheme, from the following universities:

Makarere University, Uganda

University of Khartoum, Sudan

University of Juba, Sudan

Yerevan State University, Armenia (microbiology)

The Degree

The master's programme leads to the degree Master of Science in Biology. It is a two-year programme (120 ECTS).
