The pilot study

• The pilot study is part of a larger investigation of teenage slang, which will be carried out in the Nordic countries.
• The pilot study in Sweden was carried out in Alvesta in February 1997 by Ulla-Britt Kotsinas. The questionnaires were handed out in 2 classes in their 11th school year, with a total of 72 pupils.

The main slang study

• The main slang study in Sweden was carried out during spring and fall 1997.
• Questionnaires were sent out to different areas in the three main cities Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö as well as to a number of smaller places all over Sweden. The number of schools that responded was far greater than expected. A total of 1987 questionnaires have been collected from 27 schools in 15 different places, from Skåne in the south to Haparanda and Kiruna in the north of Sweden.

Total: 9 schools, 666 questionnaires

Total number of answers to the 55 key words: 112 573

All the above given answers have been entered into a database and are being analysed. Currently the analysis is focusing on the material from Stockholm. The results from some schools are ready. The collection of slang material in Sweden is now considered finished.
