Democratising knowledge for global development: the role of European higher education institutions

Edited by Han Aarts, Tor Halvorsen and Peter Taylor, this book is a collection of papers by leading experts exploring one critical question: How can (European) higher education contribute to global human development?

Democratising knowledge for global development: the role of European higher education institutions is the 23 in the EAIE's series of Occasional Papers, and was first published in September 2011. Several key themes are adressed by the authors, such as European higher education’s commitment to engaging with partner institutions in the Global South; rethinking ‘globalisation at home’; rethinking ‘knowledge for development’; and seeking new modalities for collaboration and engagement.

Tor Halvorsen has also contributed with the second chapter of the book, entiteled "Believing in scientific knowledge? The African research university in crisis." Here, Halvorsen argues that "the research university in Africa is in crisis due to lack of support and failing beliefs in the value of university-based research" and examples of current initiatives to rectify the situation is presented.
