Over the last decade, members of the PGC-1alpha (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-gamma) coactivator-1alpha) family of transcriptional coactivators have emerged as critical regulators of skeletal muscle plasticity. We have recently identified novel PGC-1alpha splice variants involved in the control of muscle mass and function, with significant impact on mouse models of muscle atrophy and cancer cachexia. Focus will be given to a new role for PGC-1alpha proteins in psychiatric disease.
