Hovedinnhold

Welcome to the Global School Film & Reflections series, providing food for thought, body and soul. The series addresses the global challenges that are at the heart of the Bergen School of Global Studies: Climate, Governance, Health, Inequality and Migration.

When 93-year-old President Mugabe was ousted in 2017 after decades of repression, hopes of a democratic future in Zimbabwe were reignited. The movie President follows the power games and dreams of freedom in the weeks leading up to the country's first elections after the dictatorship. It follows the idealistic Nelson Chamisa whose election campaign faces several obstacles including the established party, corruption, fraud and an economy on the brink of collapse. Join us for a conversation about democratic transition and how the road to freedom and change are often hampered by old power structures.

In cooperation with Biff we will screen the movie President followed by a panel discussion with Matthew Gichohi (CMI), Tererai Obey Sithole (MDC Alliance Youth Leader) and Wesley Maraire (LawTransform) hosted by Lise Rakner (UiB). Rakner is the co-leader of the Governance Pillar and co-director of the Bergen School of Global Studies

The movie screening starts at 17:00 in Magnus Barfot Movie Theatre followed by the panel discussion at 19:15 in Kulturhuset.

Both events are free and open for all.

PRESIDENT (2021)
In 2018 political underdog Nelson Chamisa ran for the office of the president of Zimbabwe against the incumbent Emmerson Mnangagwa. Danish filmmaker Camilla Nielsson (DEMOCRATS, 2015) was granted unprecedented access to Chamisa and his team, and the result is this uniquely candid and intimate document of his campaign and Zimbabwe's fledgling democracy. PRESIDENT, however, is more than just a film about Zimbabwe - it is a nuanced, thorough and indispensable film about democracy and political process.
