Objectives and Content

Objective:

This course provides an introduction to epidemiology

 

Content

The course includes the following main themes:

  • Measures of disease occurrence and associations between exposure and disease
  • Epidemiologic study designs
  • Evaluation and interpretation of results from epidemiological studies.
  • Bias. Confounding
  • Planning an epidemiologic study

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

 

Knowledge

The student is able to:

  • describe basic epidemiological concepts and epidemiological study designs
  • discuss how bias and confounding may influence research results
  • discuss causality in epidemiological studies

 

Skills 

The student is able to:

  • plan an epidemiologic study, under supervision
  • measure disease occurrence
  • measure risk associations
  • recognize how confounders are accounted for in analysis
  • justify and explain choices of different epidemiological research designs

 

General competence

The student is able to critically evaluate and interpret results from epidemiological research presented in scientific and popular media

Proficiency in English at a level corresponding to TOEFL 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based) or IELTS band 6.0 is expected.

Students enrolled in the master programme in Global Health, students enrolled in similar programmes at UiB or other partner universities.The course is a part of the more complex course INTH315, and it will be mostly administered for post graduate students in dentistry.
Teaching and learning methods
Lectures, group work, quizzes, exercises.
Teaching Methods and Extent of Organized Teaching

Each day has a mixture of lectures and practical sessions, with group work or individual work on specific assignments and the use of the computer laboratory for practical examples. The lectures are interactive, and course participants are encouraged to ask questions and discuss during all sessions. Scientific papers will be handed out for reading, group work and presentations/discussions in plenary together with the course facilitators/lecturers.

40 hours interactive lectures

40 hours for individual and group assignments (26 hours supervised)

40 hours individual reading

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

Active participation in group work.

The student must pass 8 quizzes.

Course Evaluation
Students evaluate the teaching according to the quality assessment requirements of the University of Bergen. The evaluation method is anonymous and through an online electronic form or a paper form.
