New publication in Nature Geoscience

Andreas Beinlich, the latest addition to the K.G. Jebsen Centre for Deep Sea Research, has published an article in Nature Geoscience, titled "Instantaneous rock transformations in the deep crust driven by reactive fluid flow".

In this paper Andreas, together with colleagues from FU Berlin, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Czech Geological Survey and the University of Lausanne constrain the timescale of pervasive fluid-rock interactions. This study was conducted on a serpentinized ophiolite fragment in the Linnajavri area of Northern Norway. The results indicate that large-scale and pervasive alteration of oceanic lithosphere was driven by CO2-bearing fluid and occurred on timescales of tens to one hundred years. This is an important step towards understanding the timescales of significant fluid-mediated geological processes because these can in most cases not be constrained by traditional methods.
