Mål og innhald

This is a course to gain fundamental understandings of terrestrial ecosystem ecology, particularly focusing on the cycles of energy, water, carbon, and nutrients. Additionally, the course emphasizes the central processes that characterize terrestrial ecosystems such as tracing the flow of water, carbon and nutrients from their abiotic origins to the cycles through plants, animals, and decomposer organisms. Ultimately, the course aims to establish fundamental knowledge on terrestrial ecosystem ecology for future applications of the knowledge towards problems in Earth System and climate change as well as ecosystem sustainability.

The course consists of lectures based on the textbook 'Principles of Terrestrial Ecosystem Ecology' and discussions. The discussion topics consist of scientific articles to career development for future research scientists such as CV writing, presentation skills, popular science writing, and reviewing a manuscript for a journal. Student involvement is essential, therefore, the students are required to give lectures, lead discussions, and submit written assignments throughout the course.

Upon completion of the course, the students should gain confidence on

  • Fundamental concepts on the cycles of energy, water, carbon, and nutrients in terrestrial ecosystems.
  • Applications of knowledge on ecosystem ecology towards Earth System, climate change, and ecosystem sustainability.
  • Oral and poster presentation skills.
  • Writing and reviewing both popular science and scientific journal articles.
  • Future career as a well trained ecologist.

Krav til studierett

For oppstart på emnet er det krav om ein studierett knytt til eit masterprogram/Ph.d-utdanninga ved Det matematisk-naturvitskaplege fakultet.

Obligatorisk undervisningsaktivitet

The students must show 75% classroom attendance. In addition, the students must lead 1 lecture, 1 paper discussion, hand in homework assignments, and submit 1 take home exam at the end of the course to pass.
