Mål og innhald

The objective of this Module is to explore the foundations of health promotion theory, practice and research, originating in the WHO Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion related to Development. The general approach of all aspects of the health promotion specialisation is a resource¿based perspective. Students are encouraged, through multiple learning methods, to develop an understanding of the conceptual, theoretical and philosophical frameworks that underpin health promotion. Research¿based examples and applications will be used to relate Health Promotion principles and concepts to topical development issues

On completion of this course the students should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student has in-depth knowledge of:

  • The concepts, principles and ethical values of health promotion as defined by the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion (WHO, 1986) and subsequent charters and declarations
  • The concepts of health equity, social justice and health as a human right as the basis for health promotion action related to Development
  • The family of socio-ecological theories such as determinants of health and their implications for health promotion action related to Development
  • The family of strengths-based theories such as Salutogenesis and their implications for health promotion action related to Development
  • Emerging theories applying health promotion principles in a development context
  • The impact of social and cultural diversity on health and health inequities and the implications for health promotion action
  • The systems, policies and legislation which impact on health and their relevance for health promotion

Skills:

The student will have the ability to

  • work collaboratively in groups to solve problems
  • critically analyse and extract the essence of written texts
  • select and apply relevant health promotion principles and theories to solve practical and theoretical problems related to global development

General competence:

By the end of the course the student has:

  • The ability to critically analyse written and oral material from a health promotion perspective
  • The ability to apply knowledge and skills in new areas to complete complex assignments

Open to all students registered in Master's Programme in Global Development in the Health Promotion track.

Open to master's students registered in other relevant programmes at UiB.

Arbeids- og undervisningsformer

The teaching methods will consist of lectures, workshops, and a Problem Based Learning (PBL) component.

Obligatorisk undervisningsaktivitet

  • Presentation of selected course readings for the class
  • Participation in the workshops (80% attendace) and PBL tutorials (80% attendance) and presentations.

All activities and assignments must be completed and approved before the student can proceed to the home exam.

Will be made available on 1st December for the spring semester and 1st June for the autumn semester.
