Mål og innhald

In collaboration with the Master-program mentor (UiB) the student will compose a 30 ECTS course curriculum based in available and relevant courses at UIB.  In addition to 20 ECTS elective coursework at UIB departments, 10 ECTS may be designated as self-organized study at the Department of Government where the student conducts a self-taught course supervised by the MA program.

A student who has completed the course should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge

The student can

  • recognize key theoretical perspectives and their applicability to global challenges
  • understand when and to what problem sets a particular approach is most relevant
  • understand key choices, ethical standards and quality criteria in academic writing

Skills

The student can

  • Organize curriculum and integrate different theoreies and  methods an empirical analysis
  • Present key empirical and theoretical insights to other students
  • Collect, align abstract theories and concepts, empirical knowledge about policy responses to global challenges, and the political science analysis of different governance approaches
  • provide practical applications of theory through written and oral presentations and in discussions with relevant actors in public policy and administration

General competence

The student can

  • identify and manage ethical and scientific standards of qualitative research
  • address complex challenges
  • make independent and professional assessments of policies, relevant organizations and institutional arrangements

Completion of the all first year courses.  Proficiency in scientific methods (qualitative and quantitative).

This course option is only open to students accepted into the Master program in Politics and Governance of Global Challenges. No guest students may participate.

Vurderingsformer

One 20 page paper (excluding the title page, table of contents, references, tables, and all attachments) discussing learning outcomes including the self-established outcomes (the paper's contents should focus on methods and activities used to master an objective, the results achieved, critical reflection about the experience). The form and content should hold the general standards of scientific work (essay).

The exam will be given in the language in which the course is taught. 

The exam answer can be submitted in English.

A retake exam is arranged for students with valid absence according to § 5-5 in the UiB regulations.

If there is a retake exam, this will be available for students with the follow results/absences:

  • Medical certificate/valid absence
  • Interruption during the exam
  • Fail/failed

If you have the right to take a retake exam and a retake exam is arranged for students with valid absences, you can sign up yourself in Studentweb after January 15.
