Mål og innhald
Logopedics are urged to used evidence-based practice (PBL) when treating those with communication disorders. Yet many struggle to translate research studies into clinical practice. This course seeks to help bridge the research-to-practice gap by providing a frameworks for identifying 1) the level of evidence provided by treatment research articles and the individual parameters necessary to faithfully reproduce the treatment. The course will begin with an explanation of treatment research and the level of evidence that different types of research provides for evidence-based practice. This will be followed by discussion of treatment parameters and how they should be individually specified during treatment planning. A handout detailing each parameter will be used to evaluate the information provided in published research studies. Students will be assigned research studies that represent different levels of evidence and be asked to complete the treatment parameters handout for each. The class will reconvene after a period of independent work (suggested 2 days) to share their findings. On the final class meeting day, they will be asked to present a treatment in the area of aphasia rehabilitation, oral language, literacy development, or speech sound disorders based on an article from the literature. For their final project, they will be asked to write a reflection paper concerning the promise and challenges of translating research to practice and illustrate their points from the papers analyzed during the course.
