Mål og innhald

This module facilitates a critical awareness of the social function of art in relation to feminist, queer, de-colonial, and intersectional discourses. Special focus is given to the ethical and political dimensions of contemporary art, and to the connections and differences between art and activism.

Lectures, reading groups, and discussions are used to facilitate insight into complex issues, and the module concludes with an individual submission (text, oral presentation, or other format), in which the student contextualizes their own artistic work.

Hammer & Mirror ¿ Ethical Dilemmas in Fine Art

The workshop Hammer & Mirror enables critical discussion on the social function of art in relation to central discourses in contemporary art. Feminism, Queer and De-colonial thought are presented and discussed through lectures, reading groups, and workshops. Focuses include Indigenous Methodology with Sámi Indigenous scholar Dr. Liisa-Rávná researching Sámi ways of being (ontology), knowing (epistemology), and doing (axiology). And Awkward Archives ¿ using the collection of methods explored in the manual Awkward Archives Ethnographic Drafts for a Modular Curriculum by Margareta von Oswald and JonasTinius; collections and archives in Bergen will be explored and animated. In addition, an anthology of texts will be read, discussed, cut up and reassembled to unpack meaning. CHOIR CHOIR CHOIR experiments with voice and recording ¿ exploring new techniques in machine learning and sound manipulation to create a polyphonic sound work. Visual outcomes include the making of a card game: LOCATE/MAP/MYTH using the mobile print station (silkscreen). Through research, aesthetics and storytelling: Feminism, Queer and De-colonial thought will be explored through collaboration.
