Mål og innhald

This is a project based module with a focus on artistic expressions. In an experimental process a given MOOD is explored.

Presentations and discussions form the discursive part, on the basis of which each student investigates effects, gestures and/or staging, leading up to individual and/or group presentations of the resulting artwork(s).

Extended focus and insight into contemporary art and its use of affect and emotions, and the poetic and the irrational. Through the development of an individual and/or a group project the student will acquire experimental experience on how emotional impact and expression might be constructed and presented.

Learning Outcome

  • In depth understanding of the production and manipulation of moods and expressions.
  • Broad knowledge from the development of artistic projects.

  • Advanced experience with various effects and means of expression.
  • The means to develop and manipulate mood aspects of individual- or group projects.

General Cometence:

  • In depth understanding of connections between formal constructions and emotional expressions in the student¿s own work.

MOODS - Something eerie, something weird, something blissful, something feared

is a workshop with

Søren Thilo Funder, PhD-candidate / video-artist

MOODS - Something eerie, something weird, something blissful, something feared is an intensive workshop dealing with the exploration of moods. A mood, thought of here, as a certain condition of poetic, irrational, temporary and often quite intangible qualities and reverberations. In a political setting the mood could constitute that feeling of unease or ecstasy that urge on collective movement and action, but in its fleeting and affective nature falls short of creating that solid moment to rally around. In the artistic expression the mood could relate to intuition, feelings, desire, the unknown and the other - that inexpressible atmosphere that the artist senses (as important) and works towards bringing into experiential being. In a time-based art practice the mood shapes pockets of temporality that oscillate between creator and affected. A mood is in essence a temporal figure in the way a mood is shaped as forming, taking place and passing. In our contemporary social media setting we set the mood for others to see regardless of the impossibility of these settings ever truly reflecting the deeper emotional traits of the strange materialisation of a mood. The sense of something forming a crawling on the skin, a skip of a heartbeat, a burdensome breath or a set of phantom eyes resting on us, escapes the formats of mood setting in our device relayed reality. How do we work then with the notion of a mood? How do we relay this type of experience that escapes expression? How do we explore the political and social potential of the formation and changing of moods? And how can an artistic practice that take into account the emotional and poetic power of the mood create new spaces for collective experiences and resilience?

MOODS - Something eerie, something weird, something blissful, something feared is a project based workshop with a focus on artistic expressions. In an experimental process a given mood is explored. We will take on a collective research of the qualities, pitfalls and strange relationships forming in the artistic work around the ghostlike notions of a tension in the air, a feeling of, something sensed, a thick atmosphere, an undefined dread, a sadness descending, a sparkling lift, a nervous electricity, a suspicious tonality, a tender embrace, an enveloping fear, a fragmented being, a strange timelessness, an oceanic feeling. Together we will read, watch, discuss, experiment and produce. All in no hierarchical order. The different forms of knowledge collected from different forms of approach, hopefully informing and enriching one another. Together we¿ll explore the way moods are being used in contemporary art practices, in cultural production and in critical theory. We¿ll discuss certain mood figures ranging from the weird and eerie of horror fiction to the oceanic feeling and the uncanny of psychoanalysis, from the personal experiences of affect and emotions to a political collective body affected by societal mood swings. The workshop will comprise collective discussion and research and individual or collective art production.

MOODS - Something eerie, something weird, something blissful, something feared is the third of three separate workshops, set up by Soren Thilo Funder, setting out to elaborate on and experiment with notions of creating new narratives in political art practices. The workshops are thought of as extensions to his artistic research project THE HORROR OF THE DROP, but really extension in the sense of off-brood, deformity, hellspawn, intruder and welcomed foreign agent in a transmutating body.
